Mesothelioma and my Dad

My Dad passed away on April 6th 2008 after a battle with Cancer.

The type of cancer that he had was called mesothelioma. A lot of people will never have heard of mesothelioma before - it is still considered a rare disease. the incidence rate is one in a million, according to wikipedia. People who have this type of cancer contract it from inhaling asbestos particles, dust and fibres.

Even though mesothelioma affects the lungs, it has no association with smoking.

My mother and I have set up a page with justgiving.org in order to accept donations to the June Hancock Mesothelioma Research Fund. The money helps those suffering with the disease, as well as helping to fund research.

The following list contains examples from the June Hancock Mesothelioma Research Fund Website, and gives examples of how donations are spent:

  • £4000 to support the continuation of a voluntary national meso help line for one year
  • Support for pathology research programme in Glasgow
  • Research trial in Leicester - £20,000 over two years
  • £4000 for reprint of patients information booklet on Mesothelioma
  • £2800 for Mavis Robinson MBE, mesothelioma information project manager and one of the UK’s few specialist mesothelioma nurses, to produce a comprehensive information booklet for sufferers and carers;
  • £5000 towards setting up a Specialist Nurses Network, providing an information pack for nurses;
  • £5000 has gone to the Medical Research Council for the ‘Meso 1′ chemotherapy trial (pilot study) together with funding for literature for the patients on the trial.
