Being Naive At Christmas

When I was really very small
Around the time when Santa would call
I believed the world had to be good all day
Otherwise what would Santa say?
No drugs, robberies, or naughty folk
I thought everyone was on best behaviour, no joke!
It was one day where I wasn’t in fear
All the ‘baddies’ were eating mince pies, and spreading cheer
Nobody would dare to steal any of my toys
No naughty girls or naughty boys

Now I am big and I have grown
All the bad things that I’ve been shown
Makes me very sure that in actual fact
There is no kind of niceness pact

People just don’t stop being mean
For the fear of being seen
By Santa Claus on Christmas day
They carry on being evil, anyway

Story: I just made this little poem up.
I took my dog Dylan for a little walk at midnight and remembered back to when I was small, and playing outside around Christmas, I just presumed I’d be safe and nobody would harm me or my possessions as Christmas was cheerful and lovely. Surely nobody would feel the need to be upset or bad on this day?

After years of watching Eastenders Christmas specials, I soon realised how naive I was actually being. Of course people get hurt, robbed and killed around this time.

Anyway, I hope everyone has a lovely day. And I don’t claim to be a poet, so as long as it almost rhymes I am happy!
